Thornton Oaks Residents Speak
Eileen and Lew Kleinkopf
Eileen and Lew Kleinkopf fell in
love with Brunswick while visiting
Bowdoin College with their granddaughter.
“We lucked out when we found
Thornton Oaks,” says Eileen.
“It’s such an enriching
environment. Our neighbors here are
former deans, PhDs, Ivy League graduates
and people who have lived very accomplished
lives.
“What attracted us to Thornton
Oaks was the Bowdoin campus and all
it has to offer, particularly the
International Music Festival. Not
only can we attend the concerts at
Bowdoin, the students come here and
perform for us on Friday afternoons.
A little farther afield, there’s
the wonderful Portland Symphony and
Portland Stage. And Thornton Oaks
provides transportation, door to door.
“We enjoy going to Portland,
but Thornton Oaks does a very good
job of bringing speakers and performers
here to us. There are foreign affairs
luncheons, retired professors who
come to give lectures, and Jerry Wiles
who does charming biographical performances.
“The health service coordinator
sets up flu shot clinics every year.
It’s one of the perks of being
associated with Mid Coast Hospital.
“And it’s affordable.
Compared to retirement communities
of the same caliber in the New York
and Boston metropolitan areas, Thornton
Oaks provides a very good value.”
