Thornton Oaks Retirement Community

Welcome to Thornton Oaks Retirement Community

We are located in Brunswick, Maine, a town cited twice by Money magazine as one of the top communities in the U.S. in which to retire. Brunswick is the gateway to Maine’s Mid Coast region and sits on the northern rim of Casco Bay.

Our community is distinguished by residents who enjoy a wide range of interests and are united in their pursuit of lifelong learning. We are fortunate to choose from a myriad of cultural events and activities—here at Thornton Oaks, on the nearby Bowdoin College campus and in neighboring Portland.

Maine attracts those with an affinity for nature, an inviting slice of which you’ll find right here in our own wooded setting. We invite you to spend some time on our website and familiarize yourself with everything we have to offer.

Life at Thornton Oaks is as varied and diverse as our residents, who are instrumental in planning and shaping community events. The calendar is filled with daily activities, from book groups and bridge parties to foreign affairs lectures and flower arranging. The Thornton Oaks shuttle bus makes frequent trips to the Bowdoin College pool and local shopping centers, as well as cultural excursions to Portland and Boston.

Ours is a friendly and welcoming community. Residents find it easy to connect with others who share similar interests and many tell us that they have never been as social as they find themselves now, in retirement.

COVID-19 Update

For the last thirty years our first priority at Thornton Oaks has been the safety and welfare of all our Independent Living residents and staff. That is still true today especially in the midst of the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 virus.

Thornton Oaks does not presently have any residents or staff who have been infected with COVID-19. We have adopted CDC (Center for Disease Control), Maine CDC and Mid Coast–Parkview Health guidelines for the health of our residents and staff. Our plan includes:

  • Extensive cleaning and disinfecting throughout our building.
  • Ongoing education for combating COVID-19 transmission routes with specific hygiene practices for our residents and staff.
  • Postponing or canceling group gatherings larger than 10 people.
  • “Social Distancing” to encourage 6 feet separation between individuals.
  • Meal delivery to the apartments.
  • Working with residents as they identify their back-up plans in the event they become ill.
  • Allowing only essential visitors such as health care professionals and scheduled contractors. Family Members may visit when prudent, as determined on a case by case basis.
  • Updating our established Emergency Preparedness Plan to include the ongoing COVID-19 recommendations of the CDC.
  • Reminding our Independent Living residents to maintain at least two weeks of non-perishable food and prescriptions in their residence as well as keeping thermometers should the need arise.
  • Encouraging our staff to stay home when sick and utilizing emergency plans with remaining staff to execute key duties.
  • Open communication lines between residents and staff. We are updating family members.
