Is He Dead? is Mark Twain’s lost comedy of starving Parisian artists who will just “die” for success.
Written in 1898, the play focuses on a fictional version of the French painter Jean Francois Millet as an impoverished
artist who, with the help of friends, stages his death in order to increase the value of his paintings.
Combining elements of burlesque, farce and social satire, the story raises questions about fame, greed and the value of art.
