Shortly after Thornton
Oaks opened its apartment
residences, Matthew
Terrace, in the fall of 1994, a
group of residents formed
an Art Committee, expressing
their desire to bring exhibits
into our common areas.
That committee has since
invited artists and art
groups from throughout
the area and beyond, to
mount exhibits, each with
an opening reception. The
committee has arranged
at least eight exhibits
a year.
For 10 years, one of the
most popular shows has
been the annual Resident's
Choice Art Exhibit where
residents share what is
of particular pleasure
to them, from paintings
to sculpture, handwork
and antiques. Residents
explain where, when, and
why they acquired the art
and what it means to them,
an engaging way to broaden
the understanding and friendships
within the community.
Exhibits have also included
the work of the senior
art classes at Brunswick
High School, the photography
of the Portland (Maine)
Camera Club, one of the
oldest camera clubs in
the country mounting a
juried
exhibit;
art from Bruce Brown, curator
of the Center for Maine
Contemporary Art.
In addition, the sales
at exhibits has enabled
the art committee to mount
an ecclectic collection
of art throughout the Matthew
Terrace apartment building,
noted, appreciated and
enjoyed by residents and
guests.
